WHAT IS SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION?
Millions of men and women across the world suffer from cosmetic problems associated with their scalp and hair, often resulting from genetic or dermatological conditions.
Since hair loss is a progressive process, people have turned to the use of concealers to reduce the visual contrast between the colour of the hair and scalp.
Typically done using powders and pastes, concealing has seen a rise in popularity and is now offered through the use of tattoo, a process known as scalp micro pigmentation (SMP). The best scalp micro pigmentation (SMP) Mumbai residents can access is performed by Dr Malay Mehta. Find out more about the benefits and limitations of the scalp micro pigmentation hair treatment below.
Scalp micro pigmentation, SMP, is the refinement of the scalp tattoo process. SMP treatment involves placing tattoo pigment in microdots of less than 1cm at a similar distance to your hair follicles.
Dr Malay Mehta’s scalp micropigmentation in Mumbai combines the art of tattooing with cosmetic surgery. The tattoo pigments are spaced out accordingly depending on the patient’s targeted goals. Scalp micropigmentation is also referred to as pointillism, which is done to produce natural depth and hair definition.
WHO IS THE IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR
Unlike alternative hair loss treatment such as PRP or a hair transplant, SMP treatment can be used to treat all kinds of hair loss. This includes those who have hair loss as a result of:
- Genetics (alopecia)
- Thinning hair
- Male and female pattern baldness
- Surgical scarring
- Scarring from hair transplant methods such as FUE or FUT
If you are unsure about your eligibility, we recommend you arrange a consultation at our hair transplant clinic at your soonest convenience.
There are many benefits of opting for scalp micropigmentation, such as:
- The use of SMP can help augment a hair transplant in patients who lack the number of hair follicles needed to undergo a hair transplant.
- SMP treatment can be used as a non-surgical alternative to invasive procedures in both males and females who do not want to opt for surgical treatment such as a hair transplant.
- SMP is an effective treatment for concealing scarring.
- SMP can treat those who have lost hair due to chemotherapy.
SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION MUMBAI RESULTS
Scalp micro pigmentation produces a stubble-like effect, filling out areas of balding that cannot be treated using a hair transplant. By using tiny, micro-needles, Dr Mehta can precisely place each pigment to ensure that there is minimal recovery.
Results are often seen after the second session at around week 10. The pigment will appear darker at first, similar to a new tattoo. After 7-10 days, the pigment will fade into its longer-lasting colour.
Like tattoos, you can expect semi-permanent results when it comes to scalp micro-pigmentation. The pigment colour is chosen specifically to ensure it doesn’t fade. The pigment typically lasts for 8 – 12 months, depending on the patient’s ability to retain the ink. Patients are expected to come in for annual routine appointments to top-up their SMP treatment.

Side by side comparison was done at 6 months following sapphire FUE hair transplant.
Patient wanted further improvement so we did scalp micro pigment plus he is on minoxidil for one year . Solo image was taken one year after he came to clinic.
So final outcome is because of FUE, MINOXIDIL, SCALP MICRO PIGMENT.
Number of grafts implanted for SAPPHIRE FUE surgery: 2700
Anaesthesia: procedure was done under local anaesthesia
Pain: no to minimal for both FUE AND SCALP MICRO PIGMENT.
Side by side comparison was done for hair transplant result at 1 year ( sapphire fue ) -6000 grafts including scalp and beard donor area
Then patient wanted to optimise result even more .we did 3 sessions of GFC AND ONE SESION OF SCALP MICROPIGMENT
Procedure: sapphire fue 6000 grafts one first sitting. On follow ups 3 sessions of GFC and 1 session of SMP
Pain: no to minimal
Result: final result at one and half year
3000 grafts were implanted from front and mid scalp to crown area.
Later on, to achieve the higher scalp volume, we did scalp micro pigmentation. Even his donor was limited so we couldn’t do FUE with more grafts.
We have also done micropigmentation on donor area in this case.
Did two hair transplant at some other clinic.
Patient didn’t get the volume.
We decided to give illusion of volume by creating micro pigment dots.
Scalp micro pigmentation is a safe and effective non-invasive hair loss treatment alternative that produces the most natural-looking results. This procedure uses sterile nano-needles to deposit a pigment on the surface of your head in order to decrease the contrast between your scalp and your hair.
The step by step from consultation to procedure is as follows:
- Consultation – You will first arrange a consultation with Dr Mehta to assess your suitability for the procedure. He will discuss the results which you can expect and give you a quote.
- Treatment – The first treatment is conservative. During this session, Dr Mehta will lay the foundations of your new look. Your scalp may be tender and red but this should subside quickly.
- Treatment 2 – Around 5 weeks later you will receive your second treatment. During this treatment your hair will be shaded darker, allowing your treatment to come to life. Results produced are far more natural than traditional hair transplant methods, and so will not be obvious.
- Touch-ups – Some people require touch-ups ranging from annually to every few years. These are encouraged to maintain your youthful look.
SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION VS OTHER HAIR LOSS TREATMENT
Scalp micro pigmentation can only be offered by a skilled professional at a cosmetic or hair transplant clinic. It aims to create a permanent cosmetic tattoo that mimics the formation of your hair follicles. Unlike other conservative methods, SMP requires very little upkeep whilst maintaining outstanding outcomes.
VS Medication – Although medications such as minoxidil have been proved to enhance hair growth, they are not permanent solutions. Hair growth will cease when the medication is withheld. In addition, medication may result in side effects and discomfort.
VS Hair Transplants – Both hair transplant methods, FUE and FUT, usually need a sufficient number of donor follicles in order to be carried out successfully. When completed, the procedures can even lead to scars. SMP can be used to remove these scars or be used as an alternative to a hair transplant due to the instant results it produces.
The catch? All other hair treatment options have the same contingency – they all require you to have some residual follicles left over. Scalp micro pigmentation, however, is effortless and can be used on the baldest areas to produce outstanding results.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS WITH SMP TREATMENT IN MUMBAI?

HOW MUCH DOES SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION
COST IN MUMBAI?
Scalp micropigmentation cost in Mumbai varies from clinic to clinic. Most people make a common mistake of opting for the cheapest option or assuming that the most expensive option is the best. This is not the case. You should never pick a clinic that has a price that seems too good to be true, as most of the time, it is too good to be true.
Likewise, price doesn’t reflect a surgeon’s artistry. This is why we urge you to do your research, look at results produced by that surgeon, and get yourself a personalized quote.
